From the rocky soils in block 3 right next to our “1886” Cabernet Sauvignon blocks, we have one precious acre of Petit Verdot. From these fragile vines comes an intensely earthy and gamey expression of our Ehlers terroir as seen through the esoteric eyes of Petit Verdot. Cloaked in dark chocolate, coffee, ripe blueberries, and lavender, this is a savage, dense, fascinating, full-bodied gem of a red wine that satisfies like a powerful Cabernet, while sporting a completely different swagger.
2011 started out with a cool wet spring, setting us up for a very unusual vintage right from the start. Yields were lower that average and the cool temperatures that continued through the year reminded us more of France than California. At harvest we found ourselves dancing around the rains, but our best blocks, nonetheless, performed very well, producing complex wines with lower alcohols, firm tannins, and great structure.
