This is a single lot, single vineyard, Cabernet Sauvignon from the Aiken’s Loam hill behind the barrel barn on our St. Helena estate. As serious and compelling a Cabernet as you can find anywhere, this juicy wine is spicy, perfumed with pomegranate and peppered with cayenne. It is full-bodied, impeccably structured, and infinitely complex, with firm tannins and a powerful finish. This stunning wine will age for decades.
2011 started out with a cool wet spring, setting us up for a very unusual vintage right from the start. Yields were lower that average and the cool temperatures that continued through the year reminded us more of France than California. At harvest we found ourselves dancing around the rains, but our best blocks, nonetheless, performed very well, producing complex wines with lower alcohols, firm tannins, and great structure.
