What were you doing in 1886?

  • The French were delivering us their gift of the Statue of Liberty
  • Vincent Van Gogh was painting in Paris and packing for Arles, 
  • America was mourning the passing of Emily Dickinson
  • Robert Louis Stevenson was celebrating the publication of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
  • And Bernard Ehlers was standing in his newly planted olive grove, drinking a glass of wine, (ok maybe a nice German-style beer), and admiring his new gravity-flow stone winery.


What Were You Doing Last Week?

We were out in the olive grove with 36 wine club members drinking our own 2009 Sauvignon Blanc, a little 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon "1886", and enjoying a magical evening with lobster rolls, bay scallops, tri-tip, homemade Santa Rosa plum sorbet, a stroke from the full moon and some live music.

We just had our annual audit from the CCOF, (California Certified Organic Farmers) and though rigorous and lengthy, you’ll be pleased to hear that our organic certification is still intact!  We know our practices are clean, but the records always have to be impeccable too. You should also know that any other growers out there who are certified organic by the CCOF are not cheating or cutting corners, because they would never get away with it.  These guys looked at everything from our accounting files to our farming records to the species of weeds growing around the vineyard to the trash cans in the barn!  They peeked into all the nooks and crannies of the ranch hoping to find an old label or discarded can of round-up or mosquito repellent...  A bit of a hassle for Francisco and me, but you can take it as very reassuring news for consumers of organic foods that the certification has integrity. I walk these vineyards and eat more of these grapes than anybody, so you can take my word for it too!

Speaking of green, wow, I can’t believe the Cabernet grapes are all still green!  (Usually they’re starting to color up quickly by now.)  We winemakers love “hang time” and we often make the most intense and complex wines in years where we have an extended period between berry-set and ripening, so I’m not complaining.  The cool wet spring set us up a little late, gave us a small crop with small clusters and small berries, and now the mild summer we’ve enjoyed is going to stretch our season to the moon!  I’m hoping for another great year, but there remains a lot of summer still to come.  In French we say “C’est l’Août qui fait le moût,” (SAY LOU KEY FAY LE MOU) which means “August makes the must.”  Must is the term for the fermenting grapes once they’re in the tank, and the weather during the month of August can drive you to the bank, or send you cowering back to the barn!  Crazy cool year out here; we’ve barely seen any red tomatoes in our gardens or even in the markets and we’re getting to the end of July...

In the winery this week I’m going to finish up the blends of the 2008 reds, a small vintage, but one of amazing richness and plush velvety tannins.  I did my blending trials last week and now we’re going to do it for real. These wines are remarkable, and we’re looking to put them to bottle just before harvest.  With a little luck Karin and I will have a few more glorious California weekends to steal away to the redwoods to do a little camping with the kids before the thrill of harvest whips up.  Please feel free to keep in touch with us on Facebook or any other electronic or telephonic means at your disposal, and please come chase me down the next time you’re in the valley so we can raise a glass together.
