From the rocky soils in block 3 right next to our “1886” Cabernet Sauvignon blocks, we have one precious acre of Petit Verdot. From these fragile vines comes an intensely earthy expression of our Ehlers terroir as seen through the esoteric eyes of Petit Verdot. Like no other wine we know this is a bold, macho, compelling, full-bodied gem of a red wine. The spice and blueberries notes quickly yield to the massive, rustic, gamey, wild, and mouthfilling characteristic that are this wine’s true personality.
The extraordinary 2009 growing season brought us yet another drought year, which is generally ideal for winegrapes, yet not so great for everything else. We had a beautiful, long warm sunny summer with and endless string of hot days and cool nights. The red wines emerged from the fermentation tanks with brilliant color, fantastic extraction, and ripe, mature, supple tanins. The Ehlers crew brought all of our fruit in before the onslaught of early October rains which caught many Napa Valley vintners by surprise.
