This is a single lot, single vineyard, Cabernet Sauvignon from the Aikens Loam hill behind the barrel barn on our St. Helena estate. As serious a Cabernet as you can find anywhere, this wine is spicy, full-bodied, nuanced with French Roast coffee, caramel, and red currants, all wound around the firm, juicy tanins that typify all of the red wines from this estate. A big, balanced, elegant wine with a long velvety finish. Wow.
The extraordinary 2009 growing season brought us yet another drought year, which is generally ideal for winegrapes, yet not so great for everything else. We had a beautiful, long warm sunny summer with and endless string of hot days and cool nights. The red wines emerged from the fermentation tanks with brilliant color, fantastic extraction, and ripe, mature, supple tanins. The Ehlers crew brought all of our fruit in before the onslaught of early October rains which caught many Napa Valley vintners by surprise.
